Claude Joséphine Rose Cardinale was born on April 15, 1938, in La Goulette, Tunisia, to a Sicilian family. She entered Italian cinema in the late 1950s and became one of the leading European screen actors of her generation.
Cardinale appeared in nearly 150 films, including Federico Fellini’s 8½, Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard, The Pink Panther and Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West. Her career was honored with lifetime achievement awards in Venice and Berlin.
